Multifunctional theater company NIE, with both Czech and Norwegian artistical influence, brings their adventurous performance HAV / Tales from a Sea Journey to NoD on Thursday, June 2 from 20:00.
Tales from a Sea Journey / Hav had its world premiere on 13 January as the opening performance of NIE´s 10th Anniversary Festival Vol.I in Dramatikkens Hus, Oslo.
In November 2009, NIE embarked on a transatlantic voyage on board a container ship, the GMA-CGM Fort St Louis from Le Havre in France to Guadeloupe in the West Indies. They were rocked by a North Atlantic storm, delayed by French dock strikes, woken in the night by the smell of the land and warmed by the Caribbean sun.
For the first time NIE have worked with a writer, the Icelandic novelist and poet Sjón, lyricist for many of Björk’s best known tunes and winner of the Nordic Council’s Literature Prize in 2005 for the novel Skugga-Baldur. Together with Sjón, NIE explored stories and myths from the sea, songs and shanties and letters from home. Blurring a fine line between fact and fiction, the show explores the pull and power of the sea from both a very epic and very personal perspective.
The performance is supported by The Arts Council Norway, Spenn and The Arts Council England and is a co-production with Dramatikkens Hus.
About NIE
NIE is a company of international and multilingual collaboration between theatre workers from different European countries and traditions. The core of the group is made up of a collaboration between artists from Norway, Great Britain, Poland, Czech Republic, Belgium, Spain, Denmark and France. NIE are co-operating with different European theatres, institutions, groups and artists in their projects.
NIE uses all theatrical means available - music, light, animation, design, words, dancing, sounds, clown, buffoon, tragedy, puppets, singing - to create theatre that is alive and by turns comic, tragic, ridiculous and disturbing.
NIE was formed in 2001 and rehearsed its first three shows in the old Sokol gymnastic hall in Mseno, a small village in the north of the Czech Republic. We now have an office in Cambridge, UK and in Oslo, Norway.
