Sacred music from the 13th to 16th centuries brought alive by vocal quartet and jazz saxophone - on 19 September from 19:30 at the National Memorial on Vítkov Hill in Prague.
In September this year, Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble release ‘Officium Novum,’ the sequel to their legendary 1994 recording ‘Officium.’ Taking chants, early polyphonic music and renaissance motets as their basic material, Garbarek and the Hilliards forged a sound that mixed reverence for early sacred music with contemporary instrumental virtuosity. ‘Officium’ was a surprise hit album and won plaudits worldwide, the New York Observer describing it as representing ‘the collapse of all existing barriers between classical music and jazz, and between sacred and secular music.’ ...
Norwegian saxophonist and composer Jan Garbarek is one of the giants of European jazz. His distinctive tone and the restrained warmth of his playing, captured on a range of recordings for the ECM label, have brought him acclaim throughout the world. He has played and recorded with artists such as Keith Jarrett, Bill Frisell, Don Cherry, and Chick Corea.
The Hilliard Ensemble is one of the world’s most respected vocal chamber groups. It has built a reputation for excellence in both early and new music.
