Brandeland & Kristoffersen (NO): Svartlamoen Housing

Two tenement houses in Trondheim, a neighbourhood where an alternative population gradually have started to move since the 1970s – then punks, today middle-class anarchists. Only recently Trondheim embraced this development. All city-owned property was transformed to a foundation, the area was newly labelled as a semi-autonomous urban ecological area and a competition was organised - the jury included representatives of the local community. A house built from untreated wood and prefabricated elements was assembled within 10 days; the rough interior as a fully flexible space was handed over to the inhabitants. To economize power consumption the external steel stairs were chosen as the exterior vertical circulation structure. This ecological, low-energy building was also the first structure of its kind in Norway. Thirty-one people live in it who were also partakers in the planning process.
